Lyoto Machida is the reigning Light Heavyweight Champion in the UFC organization. Lyoto won the belt from Rashad Evans on May 23, 2009 in UFC 98 in the 2nd Round by KnockOut. Lyoto is also undefeated in his professional career. His unique Karate-based style has earned him a reputation that commands respect among his fellow fighters and MMA fans around the world.
Lyoto was born in Belem, Brazil, the third son of Shotokan Karate Master, Yoshizo Machida. Lyoto began to train Karate at the age of three. After obtaining his Black Belt, Lyoto voiced his desire to become an MMA fighter. His father was not excited about having his son participate in MMA, but supported him and only required that his he obtain as much training in other martial arts as possible. Following his father’s advice, Lyoto obtained his Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu, studied Sumo Wrestling in Tokyo, Wrestling with Rico Chiapparelli in the USA, and Muay Thai in Thailand.
Lyoto’s most valuable philosophy and technique is the “Contra-Golpe” or “Counter Attack.” The premise is simple: your opponent is at his weakest right before and right after he attacks you. Lyoto uses this technique in every fight, drawing out his opponent and inviting him to make a mistake. Sometimes, Lyoto will play this tactic all the way to the end, winning his bout by points. However, many of his opponents grow frustrated and open themselves up to situations where Lyoto is able to easily end the contest much earlier, as was the case with Lyoto’s fights against Thiago Silva, Rich Franklin, and Thierry Sokoudjou.
